Interview with Kent Moore Cabinets for Market2Builders Newsletter by Print Comm, producer of Texas Builder Magazine. Headquartered in Bryan, Texas and founded in 1971, Kent Moore Cabinets (KMC) is the largest privately owned, custom cabinet manufacturer in the state. Even through the housing slump of these past couple of years, they have better than maintained their position and success. How and why? That’s what we asked.

Interview with Kent Moore Cabinets for Market2Builders Newsletter by Print Comm, producer of Texas Builder MagazineFirst of all, they finish green. They are the only cabinet company in Texas that uses 100% waterborne stain, seal and topcoat products. This commitment has earned them the Texas Environmental Excellence Award, the state’s highest environmental honor. Builders are more green-minded now than ever before and look for suppliers who share the same passions. Attention to environmentally friendly practices gives KMC a real competitive advantage.

Perhaps their most important marketing decision over recent years has been to push against the flow and improve the quality of both their products and services. While most companies tend to cut back during a downturn, KMC’s philosophy is “do more, not less.” They apply the principle by finding cost-effective ways to make improvements so it doesn’t impact the bottom line. For example, they have stopped importing some materials and now use higher-quality, domestic materials. It costs more, but has reduced the need for many reworks. Higher quality, less follow-up maintenance, lower cost in the end. They have also widened some of their product selections for the builders.

Keep your builders satisfied and they will keep you in business. KMC has not only kept their current customers, but has gained builders in the downturn. In the words of Teresa Galliher, Vice President of Sales-West, “It’s easier to keep the customers you already have if you keep them happy, than find new ones; although we are always looking for new customers too.”
